The situation seemed standard after Johansen was traded by the Flyers from the Colorado Avalanche at last year's trade deadline. The Flyers quickly then put him immediately on waivers which did not bear any fruit as no team decided to take him. The Flyers then realised after the waiver window closed that he had an injury and was not eligible to be transferred to the AHL.
The Flyers decided to put him on waivers again as they began the process for contract termination. Both Johansen's agent and the NHLPA have stated that this will be contested, and the official grievance has been filed.
The 32-year-old centre who stands at 6 foot 3 and 218 lbs was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2010, first round 4th pick overall. He has been a veteran across this league for many years as he has had stops with the Blue Jackets, Predators, the Colorado Avalanche and now on paper with the Philadelphia Flyers.
Even though his speed has slowed down some, he would certainly gain interest across the league if he's healthy as he has played 905 games, scored 200 and two goals with 376 assists for 578 points with 546 penalty minutes.
The Flyers and the Predators hold his cap hit at $4 million each as he held an $8 million cap yet but during the trade. It remains to be seen how long this will go on for an if Johansen will return to the NHL this year but in the meantime, he will have to wait and see how all this plays out.
