Today is a special day in Boston Bruins franchise history, as 20 years ago today, the club made a significant announcement.
On October 8th, 2002, the Bruins named Joe Thornton the 24th team captain in franchise history. ''Jumbo Joe'' took over the captaincy from Jason Allison, who held it for just one season, 2000-01. He would wear the ''C'' for two full seasons before being traded to the San Jose Sharks during the 2005-06 campaign.
In 177 games as captain, Thornton registered 68 goals and 139 assists for a total of 207 points. Thornton was succeeded by Zdeno Chara, who held the Bruins captaincy for all 14 season he was with the Black and Gold (2006 to 2020).
