Earlier this week, the Columbus Blue Jackets announced that their French player Alexandre Texier will not be back with the team next season, although he is still under contract.
Thanks to Elliotte Friedman and his 32 Thoughts podcast, we know a little more.
Two members of Texier's family have died back-to-back in recent months and the events would have affected him greatly psychologically. Playing a season away from his family was not an option. That is why he signed in Switzerland.
It is now easier to understand Texier's decision.
The French-born forward recorded career highs last year with 11 goals and nine assists in 36 games with Columbus, while averaging 14:36. However, he was affected for most of the season by a broken finger. He will play next season with the Zurich Lions in the Swiss league, much closer to home.
