Although it doesn't happen often, an injury like the one Evander Kane sustained recently can be career or even life-threatening.
Because of this, Gary Bettman and the NHL are contemplating approaching the NHLPA about implementing mandatory cut-resistant gear.
NHL insider Frank Seravalli covered the story with Daily Faceoff:
''Kane's injury was the genesis of an agenda item about player equipment on Tuesday at the NHL's bi-annual GM Meetings here following Hockey Hall of Fame weekend.''
''The NHL Players' Association has always advocated for player freedom of equipment choice. But are we inching closer to a time when the NHL will ask the union to collectively bargain the mandatory use of cut-resistant under garments in exposed areas of the body?''
It will be interesting to see if the league enforces wearing cut-resistant clothing or if it is just strongly recommended. Popular companies such as Bauer and CCM already make such clothing, which could be a huge selling point for players.
