Yesterday, 13-year veteran PK Subban somewhat shocked the hockey world when he announced his retirement from the NHL at the age of 33.

The defenseman played last season with the New Jersey Devils, recording 22 points in 77 games. However, Devils' management notified Subban that they wouldn't be bringing him back, so he hit free agency.

It was reported earlier in the summer that the San Jose Sharks and Edmonton Oilers had an interest in Subban but nothing ever went too far in negotiations, and now we may know why.

According to independent journalist, Brian Lortie, Subban was hoping to be able to choose where he was possibly going to finish his career, which never came to fruition.

As per Lortie:

''Can't 100% confirm if this is true but 2 different #NHL employees have told me that P.K. Subban had his eyes set on either a #GoHabsGo reunion or a final shot at the Cup with #LeafsForever. That were the only 2 options in his mind. When both doors closed, he was done.''

''At 33, he wanted to choose where he wanted to finish his career. He knew the back issues were going to prevent him from being the P.K. of old, but he still had gas left in the tank for one more run.''

If these reports are true, it's almost surprising that neither team even offered the former Norris Trophy-winning defenseman a professional tryout to see how he would perform.
