Update on where Fabian Lysell will play this season
Fabian Lysell has been the most anticipated Boston Bruins prospect since he was drafted in the first round (21st overall) in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.
After a very impressive season with the Vancouver Giants of the WHL, could this be the year he makes it to the NHL?
The 19-year-old recently won a bronze medal representing Sweden at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship, recording 2 goals and 4 assists in 7 games.
He has yet to see playing time in Boston or Providence, solely because of the Giants' cinderella run in the WHL plays, which was led by Lysell. The organization's top prospect continues to show his potential and what he could bring to a Bruins team needing offensive help in the forward group.
Head coach Jim Montgomery joined WEEI's ''Gresh and Keefe'' during the Jimmy Fund telethon earlier this week. He was asked how he plans to utilize the top six with top winger Brad Marchand on LTIR to begin the year after undergoing offseason hip surgery.
�'If he has a great camp he's going to get that opportunity. That's the great thing about the injury to Marchy is it opens up a door; he has to knock through that door. When that opportunity comes, earn your way into the NHL''
The Bruins recently brought in Pavel Zacha via trade with the New Jersey Devils that saw Erik Haula go the other way. Zacha is another player that can play in the top-six, which gives Lysell even another roadblock.
As per Montgomery:
�'I mean, he does it already. That's why we went and got him. He's a talented hockey player that's produced at the NHL level. Now here's an opportunity to play with one of the best players in the league.''
Montgomery also mentioned that it will come down to chemistry, and that it's Zacha's spot to lose and Lysell's to earn more than anything. Unless the youngster earns it, his first full season will be in the AHL, and realistically that's what is best for him.
