However, mostly all of those players find homes in other high-end leagues across the world, and make a respectable living there. The latest is former Boston Bruins forward Ryan Spooner, who is currently lighting it up in the KHL with Dinamo Minsk.
Through five games played, Spooner leads his team and is currently tied for fourth in league scoring with four goals and one assist.
The Ottawa native was originally selected in the second round (45th overall) by the Boston Bruins at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He was an OHL standout with 259 points in 230 games with the Peterborough Petes, Kingston Frontenacs and Sarnia Sting.
In 325 career NHL games with the Bruins, New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers and the Vancouver Canucks, Spooner has recorded 48 goals and 119 assists. His best years were with the Bs though, in 253 games he collected 41 goals and 101 assists, including a 49 point season in 2015-16.
Spooner joined the KHL in 2019-20 after his NHL career fell through, and in four seasons since, the 30-year-old has 31 goals and 84 assists in 127 games.
It's awesome to see Ryan Spooner playing well and enjoying himself once again! We miss him in the Black and Gold!
