Earlier this morning, Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney announced that the team has signed defenseman Jakub Zboril to a two-year contract extension with an annual NHL cap hit of $1,137,500.
The native of Brno, Czech Republic, was drafted by the Bruins in the first round (13th overall) of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. The 25-year-old played in 10 games for the Bruins in 2021-22, recording three assists, before requiring surgery in December to repair a torn ACL, which kept him out of the lineup for the remainder of the season.
Zboril spoke to the media this afternoon after signing his extension. He was asked about the contract and his recovery from the knee surgery:
"I am [excited]. Especially after getting injured, seeing that the team still believes in me, that's a huge deal for me ... It's [knee] feels pretty good. I was skating [for the] past four weeks now ... it's a little achy sometimes when I try to do power skating and some edge work. If it's loose and I go, I don't think about it, and it feels pretty nice."
Zboril discussed how he was actually shocked he needed surgery to repair a torn ACL after getting injured vs the Nashville Predators on December 2nd. He was asked if he knew right away when it happened:
"I did not know, actually. When I got hurt, on the video, it looked like nothing. I went to the locker room in so much pain. They checked the ligaments in my knee, and everyone thought it was okay. Then I had the MRI, and the next day, I got called that my season was done. So it was pretty bad news. I was just walking with my girlfriend in Prudential Centre when I got the call and just had to sit down. I almost started to cry. I was like, holy s**t, what just happened?"
Zboril made sure to note that he's ready more than ever to prove he's capable of a roster spot in the NHL on the Boston Bruins next season. Watch the defenseman's entire media coverage below:
