There have been no new contract talks between Jake DeBrusk and the Boston Bruins. As a UFA, Don Sweeney should exercise caution to make sure, he can get something in return for DeBrusk before July 1st.

Don Sweeney could use his current leverage and use DeBrusk to trade and sign younger, more affordable talent.

DeBrusk who had numerous teams poking around, could be sent to the Rangers, and in his place they could sign, Kaapo Kakko who is currently an arbitration-eligible RFA.

Kakko, who was underutilized by the Rangers in the post-season, desires a fresh start and the Bruins would be a great place, under Montgomery to revitalize his career.

«Trading Kaapo Kakko this summer is a no-brainer move for Rangers.»

- New York Post

His best season in the blue was in 2022-2023, with the Rangers posting 40 points( 18 G, 22 A) and 2 points( 1 G, 1 A) in 7 playoff games under Gerard Gallant.

Sweeney could trade DeBrusk and offer Kakko a two-year bridge deal on a prove-it basis, with an AAV of $1.275 Million per season.

It would be fair to assume the Rangers are going to take the same approach with Kakko and give him the same opportunity, which is one more chance to prove himself as a useful piece for their future. I would predict he gets a smaller contract than Lafreniere got as far as the money goes, but it will probably still be a two-year deal. Realistically, I would expect Kakko to re-sign on a two-year contract worth $1.275 million per season. If he can't find his confidence and take that next step the team will be expecting out of him, his time with the Rangers will be finished sooner rather than later.

Kakko has played 300 games in the NHL, with 117 points( 57 G, 60 A) with 44 playoff games of experience and 9 points( 4 G, 5 A) within that timeframe.

Kakko isn't exactly a finished product, but he has potential upside and a controllable contract.
