Just a few days after the Toronto Maple Leafs acquired Matt Benning in exchange for Timothy Liljegren there was a lot of talk that the Leafs wanted to get rid of him.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have plenty of depth and don't have room for Benning in their organization, and instead of flipping him and moving on from him in a trade, the Leafs are taking a different approach.
Today Elliotte Friedman announced that Matt Benning along with two other players were placed on waivers, giving the Boston Bruins an opportunity if they wanted.
Andrew Peeke is out week-to-week for the Boston Bruins, and their defence has not been good at all this year. If they wanted to claim Benning off of waivers it would not cost them anything, and they would get a solid stay at home defenceman which would not be terrible for the Bruins.
In my opinion the Boston Bruins not only don't have the cap space to claim Benning off of waivers, but they also don't have the room for him.
Even though Peeke is out week-to-week they have Parker Wotherspoon who is replacing him for the time being, and if the Bruins were to claim him off waivers it would just be a depth move, but it's hard to see that happening.
Benning was originally drafted by the Boston Bruins, but the Bruins opted to not sign him to his entry-level deal after that, making him a free agent.
Matt Benning has gone on to play over 400 games in the NHL in his career.
