May 23rd 1979: The Bruins Fire Head Coach Don Cherry
Donald Stewart Cherry, a prominent figure in the world of ice hockey, has left an indelible mark on the sport. Born on February 5, 1934, Cherry's career spanned from being an NHL player to a renowned coach and television commentator.
Though his time on the ice was brief, with just one game played for the Boston Bruins, he found great success as a coach in the National Hockey League. Leading the Bruins for five seasons (1974-1979) Cherry steered the team to four division titles and two appearances in the Stanley Cup Finals.
However, it was his role as a commentator that truly solidified his place in hockey history. Co-hosting the popular segment Coach's Corner alongside Ron MacLean from 1986 to 2019 during CBC's Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts, Cherry gained a reputation for his outspoken nature, distinctive opinions, and flamboyant attire.
Affectionately nicknamed "Grapes," Cherry's engaging presence and deep knowledge of the game captivated viewers for an impressive 33 seasons.
In addition to his television work, Cherry also hosted Grapevine, a radio segment in collaboration with fellow sportscaster Brian Williams from 1984 to 2019.
