Bruins general manager Don Sweeney was attempting to negotiate and re-sign Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelyck when general manager Kyle Dubas of the Pittsburgh Penguins swooped in and signed him to a new deal earlier today.

His new deal with the Penguins was a conservative one as Dubas gave him one year worth $2.75 million.

The 30-year-old defenseman has spent his entire career with the Bruins after being drafted in 2012, in the third round, 85th overall. More of a shutdown style defenseman, he was always paired up against the top players and helped shut down their main lines.

Losing a player like Grzelyck certainly puts a hole in their defense however, the team is seeing a new crop of defensemen coming up from Providence which includes Mason Lohrei and newly acquired defenseman Nikita Zadorov who will be a major upgrade for the Bruins.
