It appears that the Colorado Avalanche have their sights on James van Riemsdyk as a possible pick up in the July 1st unrestricted free agency.

Van Riemsdyk signed a one-year deal with the Bruins as general manager Don Sweeney felt that he could help them with their power play and leadership. He had modest production during the 11 games he played in the playoffs as he scored one goal with four assists for five points.

The 35-year-old forward played for three teams thus far in his career including the Philadelphia Flyers and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Avalanche have many openings in their forward lines as several players will become unrestricted free agents including Andrew Cogliano, Jonathan Drouin, and Brandon Duhaime to name a few. The avalanche only have 12 players signed to contracts going into next year but only has $15.9 million in cap space.

Being in such a cap crunch, with so many players available to be resigned a player like JVR could certainly help fill their depth roles and come at a modest cost has he only signed a $1 million deal with the Bruins this year.

It will be a fascinating time in the NHL unrestricted free agency as many teams will be looking for players as the UFA market may be quite large.
