A brief fracas erupted between the Original Six rivals, just over four minutes remaining in the third period at Bell Centre.

What began as a routine gathering of bodies in Boston's defensive zone, following Jeremy Swayman's puck smothering, escalated when Brendan Gallagher forcefully removed the Bruins goalie's mask.

Each skater on the rink found a sparring partner, and it took a few minutes before the game resumed.

The incident evoked memories of bygone years when the Bruins-Canadiens rivalry burned more intensely. However, after the Bruins' 3-2 overtime defeat, Swayman downplayed the altercation.

"I think it was a scrum," remarked the goaltender to reporters during NESN's postgame coverage. "Hockey play, you see it 10 times a night. So, nothing different."

The skirmish had the potential to be more noteworthy. As players grappled with each other, Swayman directed his gaze down the ice towards Canadiens goalie Sam Montembeault, raising his arms.

"Just letting him know I'm there," Swayman explained to reporters. "If it calls for it I'm not going to say yes or no. It didn't happen, obviously, so there's nothing to talk about."

The Bruins aim to return to the win column on Tuesday night as they face the Buffalo Sabres.
