The Boston Bruins Ruined Fabian Lysell's Rookie Lap In An Interesting Way
Unlike other NHL teams, the Boston Bruins don't force or implore the rookies to take a "rookie lap" prior to the start of the game. While it does seem like a new normal for NHL teams to partake in the Bruins don't like it.
The reason? Former Bruins Captain Zdeno Chara illustrates his point clearly, as he feels for the rookie, it could be considered hazing.
This could explain why Captain Brad Marchand of the Bruins carried this tradition into their game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, as Fabian Lysell wouldn't take a lap prior to the start of the game.
And why goalie Jeremy Swayman would lead the Bruins out onto the ice.
Chara exemplifies a true leader for the Bruins, as he attempts to make the "first-year" player feel at home. He doesn't use the term rookie and thought these kinds of philosophies would keep the winning culture going in Boston.
«I don't use the word 'rookie' because it just doesn't sound right,» Chara said during the 2019 season. «Little things go a long way and make a big difference for these young men who are trying to stay and establish themselves in the league. If we can help them out in any way, then that's great . . . how can you expect something out of a young player on the ice when you treat him differently off the ice? I believe in certain acts or behaviors, and it's a standard for me that we're not going to be using against anyone.»
The Bruins leadership has a traceable lineage of Stanley Cup champions and we should rest assured that Marchand is following in the footsteps of Zdeno Chara and Patrice Bergeron.
Lysell earned his call-up after playing 136 games with the Bruins AHL affiliate in Providence.
«Crazy, crazy how fast things can happen,» Lysell said after Boston's 4-0 win over Columbus. I woke up (Saturday) morning, didn't think of this, and then you get a call and you're up here so it's just unbelievable and definitely special for me and my family and everybody that's helped me along the way.»
While Lysell didn't earn a secondary assist during his debut against the Blue Jackets, on Justin Brazeau's goal, he was on the ice when the line scored, giving him a +1 rating.
This season in 26 games with the P-Bruins he's scored 17 points( 5 G, 12 A) and could earn another call-up soon according to Head Coach Joe Sacco.
"The message was that he didn't hurt his chances for another opportunity at some point," Sacco said. "Played a good game. Did some good things out there. It was an opportunity for him to get up in his first NHL game... He got it based on his play. He's done a good job with Providence, but I think the message is 'continue to build on your game. You did not hurt your chances for another opportunity up here at some point.'"
Which we hope is soon, as the Bruins desperately need scoring help.
