Two players come to mind that would help the Bruins in the short term and potentially in the playoffs who will likely be on a PTO contract. Firstly, former Bruins forward Blake Wheeler is likely at the top of the list.
Having played for the Bruins early on in his career, Wheeler still has some gas left in the tank who could help the Bruins with secondary scoring and their secondary power play unit. His need to continue his career along with attempting to win a Stanley cop on a contender are priorities for Wheeler and the Bruins would be a good fit to do so.
Now at 37 years old, he still was a factor with the New York Rangers even though he was recovering from a severe injury earlier on in the year. He had 21 points through 54 games which is solid production for an older player.
The second player who could help the Bruins is former Oilers forward Kailer Yamamoto. At 25 years old, Yamamoto would have a greater chance of improving his capabilities and become a serviceable forward for the Bruins at a reasonable cost. He has yet to find his game while he spent time but the Oilers and recently with the Seattle Kraken.
Signing PTO's is low risk and could have high rewards for a team like the Bruins. The team is facing one drawback in terms of signing goaltender Jeremy Swayman who is seeking a large raise which will likely tie up most of the Bruins cap space that remains.
