The Columbus Blue Jackets were hoping for a much improved season after finishing 2021-22 with a 37-38-7 record, which put them 21st in the NHL.
To make sure they improved, they made perhaps the biggest splash in free agency by inking star winger Johnny Gaudreau to a seven-year, $68.25 million ($9.75 million AAV) contract, along with signing Patrick Laine to a four-year, $35 million ($8.7 million AAV) extension.
However, the club announced unfortunate news Thursday as Laine will miss significant time due to injury after just one game. As per Blue Jackets PR:
''The Columbus Blue Jackets have placed winger Patrik Laine on Injured Reserve, club General Manager and Alternate Governor Jarmo Kekalainen announced today. He is expected to miss three-to-four weeks due to an elbow sprain suffered in Wednesday's game at Carolina.'' Tough news for the 24-year-old and the team, as he was their lone goal scorer as they dropped a 4-1 decision to the Carolina Hurricanes on opening night.
