As Boston Bruins fans know, team captain Patrice Bergeron is the epitome of class, respect and leadership.
Bergeron took a very obvious pay cut on his most recent contract with the Bruins when he signed a one-year, $5 million deal that came with a cap hit of only $2.5 million.
However, his former agent - general manager of the Montreal Canadiens - Kent Hughes, revealed that his last contract was no different. Bergeron and Hughes agreed to an eight-year, $55 million contract with Boston on July 12th, 2013.
According to Hughes, before Bergeron's previous contract was signed, the going rate for his services was north of $9 million per season, which was $2.5 million more than the $6.875 million to which he agreed.
Hughes explained the situation on the Raw Knuckles Pod with Chris Nilan:
It also helps that Bergeron is still drinking from the fountain of youth, as the 37 year old currently has 18 goals and 20 assists in 50 games this season. Not too shabby for season number 19!
