The Boston Bruins came into the season with one of the strongest goaltending tandems in the NHL with Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman.
After a strong postseason, Swayman appeared to be the frontrunner in the B's crease, but things have quickly flipped to start the 2022-23 season. Ullmark has come out of the gates hot with a 3-0-0 record, a 2.06 GAA and a .938 SV%, while Swayman has struggled with a 5.40 GAA, a .816 SV% and a 1-1-0 record.
Last night's 2-1 shootout victory over the Anaheim Ducks was a statement game by the Swede and made his case ever so clear to be the Bruins' number-one goaltender moving forward. It was capped off by his incredible game-winning save on Ducks' forward Maxime Comtois.
Head coach Jim Montgomery spoke postgame about his performance:
''Terrific. He gave us an opportunity to get two points ... ''I think he's done it every night he's been in the net. He's had a great start to the year.''
Montgomery was asked if he would continue swapping starts with Swayman and Ullmark, or ride the obviously hot hand:
''It's going to be hard to go away from him, but the things we have to consider are the 36 hours [before the Bruins' next game on Saturday afternoon].''
''He spent a lot of time in the crouch because, unfortunately, we defended more than I would've liked, or we would've liked.''
Ullmark spoke to the media after the game, sharing how his success has a lot to do with the comfortability of it being his second season in Boston.
''I just feel a little bit more comfortable off the ice.''
''With the boys, there's not a whole lot of new things, not a lot of new personnel. I don't have to get to know everybody; I don't have to get to know the system, I don't have to get to know the city, everything. Just life, basically. I'm in a better spot.''
