Latvia has never been a strong hockey nation, which shows in the country's 0-27 record in preliminary round action at the IIHF World Junior Championships.
However, that ended yesterday, as Team Latvia took down Team Czechia by a score of 5-2 to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time.
The win over Czechia was Latvia's first victory at the world juniors since its 2-1 win over Denmark on January 4, 2012, marking 3,875 days between wins. That game was for relegation, so it was their first in preliminary round play.
The celebration after the game made its way into the dressing room also shows how much this means to these young men and their country.
Latvia was only invited to the tournament because Russia and Belarus were both expelled, so it's fantastic to see them make the most of their opportunity!
