Just two years ago, in the 2019-20 season, DeAngelo was fourth in NHL defenseman, scoring with 15 goals and 38 assists for a total of 53 points in 68 games. His career took a downward spiral when he was dropped by the New York Rangers after just six games in the 2020-21 season because of an altercation with goaltender Alexandar Georgiev.
DeAngelo first got into off-ice trouble in his junior days in the OHL when he was suspended twice, including violating the league's policy covering "homophobic, racist, and sexist language" and abuse of officials.
The Hurricanes gave the defenseman another shot in the NHL this season, and he had a good season, putting up 10 goals and 41 assists in 64 games.
Then came game four this afternoon against the Boston Bruins. DeAngelo maybe had one of the more interesting games that I've seen in a while, and it was all started by none other than Brad Marchand.
Marchand clearly got under DeAngelo's skin and appeared very frustrated throughout the entire game. He took out his frustration on Bruins forward Curtis Lazar:
A dirty crosscheck up high to Lazar, and then a few more punches to the face afterwards that somehow only resulted in two minutes in penalties. Then, much to the excitement of Boston Bruins fans, Chris Wagner caught DeAngelo with a big open-ice hit in the third period:
Of course, the troubled defenseman wasn't done there. When Brad Marchand had a clear breakaway for the empty-net goal, DeAngelo decided to be even more childish and threw his stick in the direction of Marchand:
The Boston crowd inside TD Garden booed every time that Tony DeAngelo touched the puck all game long.
