The Frank J. Selke Trophy is given annually to the forward who demonstrates the most skill in the defensive component of the game during the NHL regular season and is selected by a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association.
Every season, Boston Bruins' captain Patrice Bergeron is more than likely in the running to win the award. From 2010 to 2020, Bergeron has received 564 first-place votes, while second-place Ryan Kesler received 195 in the same time frame. Including being a finalist after the 2021-22 regular season.
There's no doubt that Bergeron is the best defensive forward in the NHL and possibly ever to play the game. To put it in perspective a bit, of the top four possession lines that have played over one hundred 5-on-5 minutes together in the entire NHL this season, Patrice Bergeron centred all 4 of them:
Marchand-Bergeron-Pastrnak
Marchand-Bergeron-Smith
Hall-Bergeron-Pastrnak
Marchand-Bergeron-Debrusk
Bergeron also hasn't won the Selke Trophy since 2017.
Is there anymore to say? Probably one of the worst takes I've seen in a long time. For example, here's the first line in the article:
"It's an unwritten law in the NHL. If Patrice Bergeron is upright, averagely ambulatory, and plays more than 50 games, he's going to win the Selke Trophy for the league's best defensive forward."
The website that published the article is called Deadspin (deadspin.com), and people all over Twitter were extremely against their wild take on the Bruins veteran.
See for yourself what some of the reactions were: (Link to the full article is also in the below tweet)
