The NHL and its Player Safety Department have faced a lot of heat the last few seasons, especially since former NHL enforcer George Parros took over as senior vice president of player safety.
The NHL announced Monday evening that New York Islanders forward Mat Barzal had been fined $2500 for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Now, what exactly was the "unsportsmanlike conduct"? You would think that maybe Barzal slew footed another player, yelled the wrong thing at a referee, or even gave an obscene gesture like Ryan Hartman did last week.
None of the above, Barzal grabbed Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner's jersey from the bench while he was skating by. Even Marner himself joked after the game that Barzal should be fined, as the two young superstars are good friends on and off the ice.
