The Boston Bruins honoured their 1971-72 team on April 14th, celebrating 50 years since they won the Stanley Cup on May 11th, 1972. The Bruins defeated the New York Rangers in six games to win their fifth Stanley Cup in franchise history.
Members of the 1972 team that were in attendance to celebrate the anniversary included Don Awrey, John Bucyk, Ken Hodge, Don Marcotte, Garry Peters, Dallas Smith, Rick Smith, and family members of Ace Bailey and John McKenzie.
Before the game, most of the former Bruins watched the morning skate, except for defenseman Rick Smith who wanted to join the current team at practice. He and the late John McKenzie's grandson took shots on Jeremy Swayman at the end of practice.
The night began with a commemorative video of the team's run for the Cup, including interviews with players and media. John Bucyk dropped the ceremonial puck to Boston captain Patrice Bergeron and Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk. The Senators ended up defeating the Bruins by a score of 3-2.
