Jeremy Swayman's hot play since being recalled by the Bruins hasn't gone unnoticed. The 23-year-old was named the NHL Rookie of the Month for Feberuary and has done nothing but shine since.
At the time of this writing, the Bruins netminder is sitting on a terrific 17-8-0-3 overall record to go along with his 2.09 GAA and .925% save percentage. For a first year netminder, those stats are mind-blowing!
The B's netminder has helped the Bruins climb up the standings in recent weeks and the NHL is taking notice. In his recently posted article on NHL.com, Mike Morreale took a look at the first-year players who were front-runners for the 2021-22 Calder Trophy.
A panel of media members voted for their favorite rookies and point totals were then calculated to see which player is the favorite. Points were awarded on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis:
Moritz Seider, Detroit Red Wings, 70 points
Lucas Raymond, Red Wings, 42 points
Trevor Zegras, Anaheim Ducks, 41 points
Michael Bunting, Toronto Maple Leafs, 32 points
Anton Lundell, Florida Panthers, 18 points
Jeremy Swayman, Boston Bruins, 17 points
Tanner Jeannot, Nashville Predators, 5 points
While Swayman isn't the leader of the pack, he does stand out as the only goaltender listed.
What's also to be noted is that, so far this season, no less than 70 rookies have already played in 20 NHL games or more and over 100 of them have played in their first NHL game.
For the Bruins netminder to be ranked sixth among his first-year peers is a remarkable feat in itself.
