However, the NHL Draft Lottery will be happening roughly two months before that, on May 10.
The NHL announced earlier today that that the 2022 Lottery will indeed be held virtually once again this season, and will be broadcasted live from the NHL Network studios, in New Jersey, beginning at 6:30 pm ET.
Only teams that do not qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs (or the teams that have acquired the first-round selection of those non-playoff teams) can take part in the lottery process.
The lottery is used to identify the order of selection for the first 16 picks of the first round of the 2022 NHL Draft. The NHL announced changes to the Draft Lottery format last year so that only the bottom 11 clubs can receive the first overall selection from now on.
Here are this year's odds at landing the first overall pick (Club Rank + Odds):
32nd - 18.5%
31st - 13.5%
30th - 11.5%
29th - 9.5%
28th - 8.5%
27th - 7.5%
26th - 6.5%
25th - 6.0%
24th - 5.0%
23rd - 3.5%
22nd - 3.0%
21st - 2.5%
20th - 2.0%
19th - 1.5%
18th - 0.5%
17th - 0.5%
The 16 clubs that aren't taking part in the 2022 NHL Draft Lottery will be assigned the remaining selections, in the inverse order of how many regular season points they have picked up.
