For many, the Summit Series (or Super Series) was one of the most significant moments in hockey history. The eight-game series between the Soviet Union and Canada was held in September 1972.

What made it special was that it was the first competition between the Soviet national team and a Canadian team represented by NHL players.

The Soviet Union had just one of their fourth consecutive Olympic Gold Medal. and unfortunately, Canada couldn't ever send its best players. Therefore, the Summit Series marked the first opportunity for a best-on-best tournament.

''We knew we had the best players, and yet the Russians were called the World Champions. They were the world champions. We were the best!''

- Canadian goaltender Ken Dryden

Team Canada included two members of the Boston Bruins, forwards Phil Esposito and Wayne Cashman. Bobby Orr was part of the initial roster but never played because of injury. The Soviet Union featured future Hockey Hall of Fame inductees such as Alexander Yakushev, Valeri Kharlamov and goaltender Vladislav Tretiak.

On September 28th, 1972, 90% of the Canadian population tuned in to watch that eighth and final game of the series, and now, for the first time, the footage has been converted to 4K and will be presented in full HD for everyone to enjoy in the four-part series presented by CBC:
