TheBoston Bruins and GM Don Sweeney are compiling trade lists of desirable players and players to move. While it seems hard to believe, could Brad Marchand be on the way out of the Bruins system? NHL Insider Chris Johnston thinks so.

The Boston Bruins started the 2024-2025 with an 8-9-3 start, which would lead to Jack Adams Award-winning coach, Jim Montgomery being fired. The Bruins would be in a slump and would experience a slight resurgence under Joe Sacco, as the team is now 17-13-3, a good enough record for 3rd in the Atlantic.

While the team remains in a playoff spot the dominance the Bruins once held in the division is gone. They sit at 13th in the entire NHL, and even with an improvement hold a .561 winning percentage.

There needs to be a way to improve the team, but how?

Well NHL Insider Chris Johnston has reported that the Bruins could move the team captain, who has been with the organization for 16 years now.

Puzzling.

As a result of Boston's turbulence, NHL Insider of the Athletic, Chris Johnston, lists Brad Marchand as possible trade bait. It's a mildly confusing pick, considering Marchand has been a vital part of the Bruins organization for 16 years

Marchand's season would start slow, after undergoing multiple surgeries during the offseason. He'd contribute 25 points in 33 games for the Bruins, on pace for 62 points one of his lowest scoring seasons in a decade.

With things seeming to have normalized in Boston since Joe Sacco replaced Jim Montgomery behind the Bruins bench in November, Marchand is nearly off the Big Board.».
It seems unreasonable to think that the Bruins would trade their Captain while still in a playoff position at this moment.

The notion that the Bruins would move one of their best contributors and his value remains high to the team to this day.

Johnston writes, «He [Marchand] remains a high-end winger who can contribute offensively, kill penalties, and, yes, get under an opponent's skin.»

The team could utilize Marchand's trade value to acquire high-value assets and players should the Bruins fall out of a playoff spot.

But don't count it happening just yet, as the Bruins would have to consider moving leadership, and winning experience out of the locker room.

A non-starter for some GMs in the NHL.
