The Boston Bruins won't be adding Gabriel Fortier to their lineup after the Tampa Bay Lightning's former second-round pick officially cleared waivers. The Lightning took many by surprise on Sunday by waiving Fortier, who has mostly played for their AHL team, the Syracuse Crunch.
Fortier, now recovered from offseason surgery, seems ready to return to action, as NHL insider Elliotte Friedman suggested that waivers were the last step before his return to the ice.
In recent seasons, Fortier has been a solid contributor for Syracuse, posting 29 goals and 26 assists over two years. Standing at 5'11", he relies more on skill than size, and he's carved out a name for himself in the AHL since turning pro in 2018. Fortier has shown glimpses of his potential in his 11 NHL games with the Lightning, scoring once and adding depth to their roster, although he hasn't found a full-time spot in the NHL just yet.
For teams like the Bruins, he could've provided valuable depth, given his consistent performance in the AHL. However, Fortier went unclaimed and will head back to the Crunch to continue his season there.
Some fans might feel the Bruins missed an opportunity to add a promising player to their ranks.
