Mike Reilly was shocked when he learned that general manager Don Sweeney had placed him on waivers prior to the regular season (as was much of the fanbase). Luckily, the defenseman cleared waivers on October 11th, but apparently, one team was close to claiming him, only if the money had worked.
''According to @GagnonFrancois via the On Jase segment, Kent Hughes wanted to claim #Bruins Mike Rielly via waivers but his $3 Million cap hit prevented the #GoHabsGo from doing so.''
Canadiens' GM Kent Hughes has been trying to move salary for months now, and he needed it, to claim the 29-year-old defenseman. Reilly has a cap hit of $3 million for the next three years. Hughes, however, couldn't make it work with only $1.8 million in cap space.
It was shocking to see Reilly go unclaimed, as he could easily make any NHL team's top-six defence and even several teams' top four. It's not surprising that one team was heavily interested.
