Former Boston Bruin gets emotional after receiving tragic news
Earlier in the offseason, it was reported that Torey Krug had been suffering from pre-arthritic changes in his left ankle. If he required surgery he'd end up missing the entire 2024-2025 NHL season.
The worst has come to fruition, as the cumulative effects of a prior bone fracture early in his career, have come to require the procedure.
He would be made available for an interview on Wednesday and would inform reporters about his future in the NHL.
The surgery could mean bad news for his career, as NHL reporter Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic, Krug would become emotional, when he asked about his future.
«This summer I wasn't really able to do any of the things I need to do to prepare for the NHL season. I tried to work through it and find a way to train. We're here now because I couldn't and I'm going to get it fixed. Definitely one of the hardest things I've been through»
«Getting it taken care of as a 33-year-old professional athlete is a little bit different. I thought I'd have to do it when I was 50, down the road, and retired. So, I always knew it was something that would have to be done. It's just disappointing and sad it has to be now.»
Krug would expand on his future:
: "We don't really know that. Obviously being out for the year, you can understand it's a pretty big surgery that I have to get ... that goes into the mental side of things that have been pretty tough for me.
"At 33 years old, when you miss a whole year of hockey, those things cross your mind. I don't want to look too far ahead, but yeah, those are things that you definitely think about."
As a result of the news reported today, Krug will be unavailable for the entirety of the 2024-2025 NHL season. Which could lead to the end of his days in St. Louis as well.
«There's no guarantee that the surgery will lead to Krug returning to the ice in 2025-26, so that will have to be monitored as he recovers,» writes Rutherford.
Krug, originally signed with the St. Louis Blues in 2020, skated in 77 games in 2023-2024, scoring 39 points( 4 G, 35 A) and 32 PIMs.
He's in the 3rd year of his 7 seven-year deal that pays $6.5 Million AAV, Krug will have two more years left on his contract after 2024-2025.
In his NHL career, he's played 778 NHL games, including stints with the Boston Bruins and St. Louis Blues, scoring 483 points( 89 G, 394 A) and 374 PIMs.
We wish Krug the best and a speedy recovery to his surgery.
