Jack Studnicka was selected in the second round (54th overall), and the Boston Bruins once considered him a top prospect in the system.
However, a crowded centre core in the NHL forced general manager Don Sweeney to trade the 23-year-old to the Vancouver Canucks last night. In exchange, the Bruins acquired two prospects: goaltender Michael DiPietro and defenseman Jonathan Myrenberg.
Studnicka has appeared in 38 NHL games, recording one goal and six assists. He made the Bruins roster to start the 2022-23 season but only dressed in one of the first eight games. Moving to a weaker Canucks team should give Studnicka more of a chance to play in the NHL regularly, which is what he ultimately deserves.
After last night's game, Don Sweeney spoke to the media to discuss the Studnicka trade:
''I'm happy for him. He's gonna get an opportunity to go play and contribute in the NHL. I think he's an NHL player, and I wish him the best.''
