Early Tuesday morning, longtime player Patrick Marleau officially announced his retirement from the NHL.

Marleau spent 23 seasons in the NHL with San Jose Sharks (1,607 GP), Toronto Maple Leafs (164 GP) and Pittsburgh Penguins (8 GP). He collected 566 goals and 631 assists for a total of 1,197 points in 1,779 games played. Marleau is the NHL's all-time games played leader.

Marleau was selected second overall by the San Jose Sharks in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft after former Boston Bruin and longtime Shark Joe Thornton.

The bulk of his career was spent with the Sharks (21 years), and he holds franchise records in games played, goals, assists and points. As well as shorthanded, powerplay and game-winning goals. Marleau was the fourth player in NHL history to score 900 consecutive games.

Patrick Marleau and the San Jose Sharks held a press conference this afternoon to officially announce his retirement. Marleau was clearly emotional as he couldn't hold back the tears when thanking his family during his retirement news conference:

"I couldn't have lived out my dream of being a professional hockey player and having a family at the same time if it wasn't for you guys."
