Edmonton Oilers defenseman Tyson Barrie is up against the team that drafted him in the Western Conference Finals, the Colorado Avalanche.

It must be cool for Barrie as both teams are special to him, and the Oilers are in the Conference Finals for the first time since 2006 and the Avalanche for the first time since 2002. One thing that stood out to the media is how Barrie was traded away from Colorado not long after a new stud on the backend arrived.

Defenseman Cale Makar made his debut with the Avalanche on April 15th, 2019, in a playoff game against the Calgary Flames and even scored his first goal at the NHL level. Barrie was also on that Avs team and was asked by media if he was impressed with Makar right from the get-go, to which he responded:

"Yeah, I knew I was in trouble right when he got on the ice for the first time, 'I was like, I might be out of here!' ... he was exceptional. You could just see the way he skated [and] the way he moved the puck early."

Barrie wasn't wrong, as, on July 1st, 2019, he and Alexander Kerfoot were traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Nazem Kadri and Calle Rosen. A sixth-round and third-round picks were also exchanged. Barrie played one season with the Leafs, then signed with the Oilers.
